Special Message:  The Red Cross Shelter in Del Norte will close Monday, July 1.  The Salvation Army will provide a continental breakfast from 8 am to 9 am tomorrow for the last of the Red Cross clients.  Visit www.redcross.org/Colorado or contact your local Red Cross office for further information regarding the services they provide.

Current Situation:
East Zone of the West Fork Complex (Includes Papoose and Eastern Part of West Fork Fires)

Papoose Fire:  One of today’s priorities included taking advantage of yesterday’s moisture to secure the fireline in the northwest area of the fire, near Crooked Creek and down to Rio Grande Reservoir.  Firefighters used a combination of dozer lines, hand lines, and water or retardant drops to construct and secure line around structures.  On the southeast flank, the fire increased in activity late this afternoon in the Trout Creek drainage, Spotting occurred, causing firefighters to focus on structure protection at Spur City and Red Mountain Ranch.  Along Highway 149, firefighters were able to begin mopping up adjacent to structures.  At the time of this release, there have been no known structures lost.

Eastern Part of West Fork Fire: Increased fire activity, caused by thunderstorms and gusty winds, was experienced near Lake Humphreys and Elk Mountain areas, on the north flank of the fire.  However, firefighters were able to get closer to the fire’s edge and begin direct attack on that piece of fire line with the aid of retardant drops.  Along Highway 160, firefighters continued to clean up the fire’s edge.  Protection has been established around structures east of Highway 149.  At the time of this release, there have been no known structures lost.

West Zone of West Fork Complex (Includes Western Part of West Fork and Windy Pass Fires)
Sustained cooler temperatures and higher humidity gave firefighters additional support today on the West Zone of the West Fork Complex.  Moderated winds today gave the Air Attack that had been grounded the past two days due to smoke an opportunity to monitor fire activity.  The West Zone supported suppression of 13 new fires, all caught quickly and kept small.

Western Part of West Fork Fire: The West Zone of the West Fork fire is the portion of the fire burning south of the continental divide.  Structure protection is still in place for Wolf Creek Ski Area, Borns Lake Cabins, and Bruce Spruce Resort, which is still open, and hose lays and sprinkler systems are in place and operational in the West Fork Campground that is also open. Crews started to backhaul the excess firefighting equipment at Borns Lake, Bruce Spruce and Wolf Creek.

Windy Pass Fire:  Activity on the Windy Pass Fire today was minimal.  A resource advisor was on the fireline today to assess the landscape and to begin developing a rehabilitation plan.

Weather: Scattered thunderstorms developed this afternoon across the complex.  Gusty winds and some moisture fell across the fire area.  A potential for ash flow and mudslides still exists.  Thunderstorms are predicted for tomorrow.  Tuesday and Wednesday will be warmer and drier, with a chance of isolated thunderstorms.

Public Health and Safety:  Smoke monitors are in place in Pagosa Springs, Freemon’s Ranch, and Creede.   The monitors are identified as #78 (Creede), #69 (Freemon’s Ranch) and #65 (Pagosa Springs) and can be accessed through the map located at: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/smoke.pl. Special Message:  Due to the high demand for information about the West Fork Complex, a blog has been created to facilitate posting current and timely fire information.  Visit the blog at http://westforkfirecomplex.blogspot.com/.

Current Situation:
East Zone of the West Fork Complex (Includes Papoose and Eastern Part of West Fork Fires)

Papoose Fire:  Today firefighters will again focus efforts on the northwest flank of the fire near Crooked Creek.  Two days ago the fire had spotted across Crooked Creek into the area southeast of Hermit Lakes.  Using a combination of dozer lines, hand lines, and water or retardant drops, firefighters will work to contain the spot fires and tie them into the main fire perimeter.  On the east flank, the fire has crossed Trout Creek and is burning in the vicinity of Middle Creek.  Firefighters will continue structure protection and evaluation of structures along Highway 149 east of the fire. Interior flare-ups where the fire is burning in the beetle killed spruce is expected to continue.

Eastern Part of West Fork Fire: The fire continues to be active in the Lake Humphreys and Elk Mountain areas on the north flank of the fire.  Firefighters will again take advantage of natural fuel breaks in an effort to manage the fire spread in a manner that will reduce impacts on structures.  Along Highway 160, firefighters will look for opportunities to secure the fire perimeter in its current location to reduce the chances of the fire reaching the highway.  Evaluation of structures continues east of Highway 149.

West Zone of West Fork Complex (Includes Western Part of West Fork and Windy Pass Fires)
A change in wind direction and a brief rain yesterday brought little relief on the west part of the West Fork Fire.  Air attack has been grounded the last 2 days due to smoke, but will resume today if conditions allow.  Fire continues to burn in timber that is dead due to Spruce Beetle kill.Western Part of West Fork Fire: The West Zone of the West Fork fire is the portion of the fire burning south of the continental divide.  Structure protection is still in place for Wolf Creek Ski Area, Borns Lake Cabins, and Bruce Spruce Resort, which is still open, and hose lays and sprinkler systems are in place and operational in the West Fork Campground that is also open.

Rain fell over portions of the zone today.  Accumulations ranged from 0.02 – 0.20 inches.  Although some areas experienced wetting rain, firefighters were cautioned that in the heavy timber the moisture was not reaching the ground.  Single and group tree torching could still occur in areas that received rainfall today.  In addition, many areas received enough precipitation that roads and dozer lines could be slick.

Papoose Fire:  Fire activity was minimal for most of the day.  Around 4:00 pm the east side of the fire became active in the Trout Creek area near Baldy Mountain.  Tonight firefighters will continue structure protection on the east in Trout Creek and the northwest in Crooked Creek.

Eastern Part of West Fork Fire: Today firefighters continued to structure protection on the north, east, and south flanks of the fire.  The focus of their efforts is to use natural fuel breaks to minimize fire activity.  Tonight firefighters will monitor the fire and provide structure protection.

West Zone of West Fork Complex (Includes Western Part of West Fork and Windy Pass Fires)
A change in wind direction and a brief rain today brought little relief on the West Fork Fire on the West Zone.  Air attack has been grounded the last 2 days due to smoke, but will resume tomorrow if conditions allow.  Fire continues to burn in timber that is dead due to Spruce Beetle kill.

Western Part of West Fork Fire: The West Zone of the West Fork fire is the portion of the fire burning south of the continental divide. Structure protection continued near the Born Lake cabins.  Structure protection is still in place for Bruce Spruce Resort, which is still open, and hose lays and sprinkler system are in place and operational in the West Fork Campground that is also open.

Windy Pass Fire:  Activity on the Windy Pass Fire today was minimal.  Crews completed work around Lane Creek and continue to monitor fire activity there.

Weather:  A series of thunderstorms passed over the complex today.  Precipitation was localized with some areas of the fire receiving 0.02 inches to 0.20 inches and some not receiving any moisture at all.  Thunderstorms are predicted for the next few days with rain, lightning and winds being the primary concerns.  Winds tomorrow will be out of the Northwest 5-15 mph, with a 60% chance of rain actually hitting the ground.

Public Health and Safety:  Smoke monitors are in place in Pagosa Springs, Del Norte, and Creede.   For the official Colorado Smoke Outlook visit http://www.colorado.gov/airquality/colo_advisory.aspx and http://www.colorado.gov/airquality/wildfire.aspx for further health advisory information.

Please use caution when traveling along Highways 149 and 160.  Heavy fire traffic can be expected along the highways and within the communities of South Fork, Creede, and Del Norte.  Please do not stop along the roads to take pictures of the fire or firefighters as doing so could impede fire operations.

Evacuations and Closures: Yesterday, most residents of South Fork were able to return home.  Anyone west of Highway 149 or the Rio Grande River (whichever is closest to the fire) remain under mandatory evacuation.  This includes Elk Creek and the portion of Masonic Park south and west of the river.  All other evacuations remain in effect.  Those residents who were able to return home were reminded that if fire activity increases, they may have to re-evacuate.  Along Highway 149, traffic is being escorted between Wagon Wheel Gap and Highway 160.

South Fork:  Saturday June 29, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Community Hall
Pagosa Springs:  Saturday June 29, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Community Center

Current Situation:
East Zone of the West Fork Complex (Includes Papoose and Eastern Part of West Fork Fires)
The Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team has added a swing shift to their operations.    Fourteen engines and three hand crews staffed both fires in the east zone through the night.    The infrared flight that provides us with the most current imagery of the fire perimeter was cancelled last night due to weather.

Papoose Fire:  Last night firefighters continued to provide structure protection near the Rio Grande Reservoir, Crooked Creek, and Trout Creek on the north half of the fire.  There is still no known structure loss.  Today firefighters will again focus on the areas of the fire where structures could be impacted.  They will also begin to evaluate and prepare structures east of the Papoose Fire, along Highway 149, in the event that the fire continues to move to the east.

Eastern Part of West Fork Fire: Firefighters will continue to focus on areas where the fire is most active and structures could be impacted.  These areas include Lake Humphreys, Metroz Lake, and along Highway 149 near Elk Mountain.  Crews will work to tie together existing fuel breaks (i.e. meadows, roads, etc.) in an effort to diminish fire behavior.  East of Highway 149, firefighters continue to evaluate and prepare structures in the event that the fire crosses the highway.  Google Earth is being used to create an application that will allow firefighters to quickly identify the location of structures in that area.

West Zone of West Fork Complex (Includes Western Part of West Fork and Windy Pass Fires)
A change in wind direction and an inversion yesterday brought heavy smoke into the San Juan River Valley and Pagosa Springs area. The inversion held the smoke, and high winds and smoky conditions that persisted throughout the day.  Fire continues to burn in timber that is dead due to Spruce Beetle kill.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has installed a portable tower at the Durango Airport due to the volume of aircraft flying in the area in support of the fires.

Windy Pass Fire:  Activity on the Windy Pass Fire yesterday was minimal.  Crews worked around Lane Creek and bucket drops were done throughout the day.

Weather:  High pressure will move farther to the west allowing stronger winds from the northwest to move over the complex.  Thunderstorm chances continue across the complex with lightning, gusty winds, and rain possible.  An unstable atmosphere will continue through the middle of next week keeping the chance of thunderstorms in the forecast.

Public Health and Safety:  Smoke monitors are in place in Del Norte and Creede.

Adding the third shift allows for an on time transition between day and night forces and for adequate staffing during the times when the fires are most likely to be active.

Papoose Fire:  On the northwest flank, the fire continues to be active in Crooked Creek.  Late yesterday, several spot fires of 5 – 20 acres developed in the Hermit Lakes area.  Today, firefighters focused on structure protection and worked on the spot fires that occurred with yesterday’s extreme fire behavior.  This afternoon the east flank of the fire was active as the fire pushed to the south near Baldy Mountain.  Firefighters continued to evaluate and provide structure protection in the Trout Creek area.

Eastern Part of West Fork Fire: The fire continues to be active near Metroz Lake and Elk Mountain on the east side.  At Lake Humphreys and Metroz Lake, firefighters continue to provide structure protection.  Near Elk Mountain, firefighters are utilizing a combination of hand line, dozer line, hose lays, and aircraft as delaying tactics to slow the progression of the fire as it moves towards a more defensible position on the lower slopes.

West Zone of West Fork Complex (Includes Western Part of West Fork and Windy Pass Fires)
A change in wind direction and an inversion brought heavy smoke into the San Juan River Valley and Pagosa Springs area yesterday evening. The inversion held the smoke throughout today.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is installing a portable tower at the Durango Airport due to the volume of aircraft flying in the area in support of the fires.

Western Part of West Fork Fire:  The West Zone of the West Fork fire is the portion of the fire burning south of the continental divide. There was a run today near the Born Lake cabins, firefighters had to leave the site, but no structures were lost.  Structure protection is still in place for Bruce Spruce Resort, which is still open, and hose lays and sprinkler system are in place and operational in the West Fork Campground that is also open.

Windy Pass Fire:  Activity on the Windy Pass Fire today was minimal.  Crews will be re-enforcing and maintaining existing contingency lines during the day today.
Weather:  A Red Flag warning today caused high winds and smoky conditions that persisted throughout the day.  Thunderstorms are predicted for tonight, with a 40% chance of rain, lightning and gusty winds being the primary concerns.

Smoke:  Smoke monitors are in place in Del Norte and Creede.   For the official Colorado Smoke Outlook visit http://www.colorado.gov/airquality/colo_advisory.aspx and http://www.colorado.gov/airquality/wildfire.aspx for further health advisory information.

Evacuations and Closures:  Evacuations were lifted for much of Rio Grande County.  Evacuations are still in effect for those areas in Mineral and Hinsdale Counties.  Along Highway 149, traffic is being escorted between Wagon Wheel Gap and Highway 160.
